Monthly Report: July 2002

Conditions were difficult at the Costello & Fermoyle Fishery during July. By the end of the month, the total rod catch had reached 266 sea trout and 27 salmon with most fish rising to: Watson's Fancy, Bibio, the Golden, Magenta and Claret Bumbles, Black Pennell, Stoat's Tail and Connemara Black. The weather was unsettled at first, but, dry, still and humid conditions dominated for the remainder of the month. Undeterred, the anglers persisted and were rewarded with some respectable catches.

The highlights for the month include: Mr Geoffrey Fitzjohn who fished Fermoyle Lough early in the month and caught a beautiful 6lbs salmon and 2 sea trout (1lbs 4 ozs). Mrs Carthwright also landed a fine 5lbs salmon on Fermoyle. Lord Harrington and Captain Mills had every right to be pleased with themselves after they caught 3 salmon on Dereen Lough. Jean-Pierre Maire and Mike MacDonagh also took a salmon from Dereen, a fine fish of 6.5lbs. The focus then moved to Glenicmurrin Lough where Paul Richardson had 4 sea trout, Renee Lachenmaier and Tim Moore 9 sea trout and Peter Farrelly had 6 sea trout (including a magnificent 5lbs fish) and 1 salmon (6.5lbs). Peter Radford recorded 7 sea trout on Glenicmurrin and was also extremely pleased with the 5lb salmon he caught on Clogher Lough. Father and son team, Tom and Vincent York, were marred with extremely difficult conditions during their week's fishing, but still managed to catch 17 sea trout (best 2lbs 8ozs).

Tom Gallagher, Tom Mularkey and Fr Colm Morris fished at Costello and Fermoyle for a week and recorded some respectable daily catches including 17 sea trout over 2 days on Glenicmurrin. Tom Mularkey was shaken but not stirred when he lost a 16lbs salmon on river beat 1. Unfortunately, the fish broke him after 10 minutes. David Micks chose Fermoyle Lough and was rewarded with an 8lbs salmon as did Mrs Wendy Campbell-Grey where she caught a fine 6 lbs salmon. David Micks ventured to the top of the system to fish Shanawona Lough where he landed 5 sea trout each averaging 2lbs. Charlie Clifden fished both Glenicmurrin and Rusheen Loughs and recorded a total of 8 sea trout. Edward and James Persse took 9 sea trout after a day on Glenicmurrin.

Chris and Donna Warne recorded a total of 19 sea trout during their visit to Costello & Fermoyle. Nigel Passmore took a day on Fermoyle and landed 12 sea trout. Richard Hall fished Glenicmurrin where he caught 9 sea trout. Steven Peare went out on Fermoyle and Glenicmurrin and landed 10 sea trout and 9 sea trout respectively. Michael Smith also chose Glenicmurrin and caught 7 sea trout.

Towards the end of the month water levels were getting low and what little breeze there was came from the north. Greg Perry however was not put off and was rewarded with a fine 6lbs salmon on river beat 1 and 6 sea trout from Glenicmurrin. Mrs Bond also persisted and was very happy with the 5 sea trout she caught on Glenicmurrin.
